There are hidden dangers behind traffic citations for violating a license restriction. Some of these charges do not even carry points. However, a conviction (including paying a citation) will result in a lengthy suspension by the Motor Vehicle Administration.
Many people have restrictions on their licenses. There are restrictions that require that the licensee wear eyeglasses. Some people have a restriction that requires the interlock or precludes them from driving with any alcohol in their system. Others have a restricted license for work, school, or alcohol treatment. Young people with a provisional license may have restrictions that preclude them from driving with someone under 18, during certain hours of the day, and with alcohol in their system.
If you are charged with violating any restriction on your license, do not pay it. Request a trial and go to court. You should consider hiring an attorney to represent you. A conviction will lead to a lengthy suspension (usually one year and the suspension does not start until the MVA has your license).
If you have already paid the ticket and received a suspension letter, you may be able to reopen the ticket and at the same time file for a hearing with the MVA. The hearing will take place virtually with the Office of Administrative Hearings and they have the ability to issue a reprimand allowing you to keep your license, reduce the suspension, or give a restricted license for work or school.
