New laws almost always take effect on October 1st every year. This year is no exception. Here are some new laws that are important or interesting to know.
A motorist must now move over for any vehicle on the shoulder. Previously, one had to move over for an emergency vehicle, tow truck operator, or police car. Now, you must move over for any vehicle stopped or parked on the shoulder. If you cannot safely change lanes, you must slow down.
In rural areas, slower traffic must drive in the right lane where signs are posted.
All children's car seats must be installed rear facing until the child is at least two years old unless the child exceeds the height and weight requirements. This law brings Maryland in line with 16 other states and the District of Columbia.
All criminal charges that result in a dismissal, acquittal, or nolle prossequi will be automatically expunged after three years.
It is now illegal for a veterinarian to declaw a cat unless it is done for therapeutic reasons.
It is illegal to park in a space designated for electric vehicles unless the vehicle is in fact an electric vehicle and being charged.
A person can be compelled to testify against his or her spouse in a criminal case if they married after the crime was allegedly committed.
There are penalties for leaving an unattended dog outside in extreme hot or cold conditions.
It is illegal for someone under 17 to marry with certain exceptions.
A victim of domestic violence can file a petition for protective order electronically.
The crime of stalking has been broadened to include electronic harassment.
There are many other new laws that have taken effect. These are just some of them.
