Uninsured motorist coverage is a crucial component of your insurance policy. It covers damage to your vehicle and your bodily injury claim where the other driver does not have insurance (which happens more than you think) and where the other driver does not have sufficient insurance to cover your claims. You should check your coverage limits to make sure that you are adequately protected in the event you are struck by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.
There are now two types of uninsured motorist coverage in Maryland. The first type, traditional uninsured motorist coverage, assures coverage for an accident up to the amount of your policy limit. So, if you have $100,000 in coverage and you are struck my a motorist with $50,000 in liability coverage, you now have $100,000 in total coverage: $50,000 from the other driver and $50,000 from your own policy ($100,000 - $50,000).
You can also elect to purchase enhanced uninsured motorist coverage. For a slightly higher premium, enhanced uninsured motorist coverage provides coverage for your limits regardless of the amount of liability coverage available. So, if the other driver has $50,000 and you have $100,000 of enhanced uninsured motorist coverage, you have $150,000 in total coverage.
The minimal uninsured motorist coverage required by law is $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. This is inadequate coverage for all people. You should check your uninsured motorist limits to make sure that you are protected.
